Round stainless steel lightswitch with antique Russian leather inset.

This 260 year old Russian reindeer leather was recovered from the wreck of the Dutch brig, Frau Metta Catharina von Flensburg which sank in 1786. The ship was en route from St Petersburg to Genoa with a cargo of hemp and reindeer hides, when a storm forced it to shelter in Plymouth Sound. The Catharina eventually sank, all hands were saved, but the cargo remained until it was rediscovered in 1973.

The hides were tanned in willow bark and finished with birch oil which has preserved them in perfect condition, and they are considered to be of the finest quality. Prince Charles, The Duke of Cornwall – the owner of the wreck, permitted a limited quantity of the hides to be sold to restorers and craftsmen. This has mostly been used up, so the opportunity to use this material has become increasingly rare.

We incorporate the hide into a 5mm stainless steel fascia, to create an elegant and unique product with a fascinating historical story.
